Read this before you order or apply a physical BuildTags decal.
1.What a BuildTag is
A physical BuildTag is a decal with a QR code. The QR code opens a digital page on buildtags.app. It is not a registration, an inspection mark, a certificate or proof of ownership, and it does not replace any plate, label or marking your vehicle must carry by law.
2.What we do promise about the QR code
Each BuildTag has its own permanent address on buildtags.app. We keep that address reserved and never reuse it for another tag, even if the tag is refunded, the build is deleted or the account is deleted. While the tag is active and the BuildTags service is operating, scanning it takes people to the vehicle's page. The page behind it can change, and the printed code stays the same.
If a tag is switched off, was never activated, or its build is disabled, the address shows a message that says so instead of a vehicle page. A scan alone never gives anyone control of a build.
3.What we do not promise
We cannot promise that:
- every phone or scanner app will read the code, from every distance, in every light or on every surface;
- a tag keeps scanning after it is scratched, faded, dirty, peeled, covered, wet, frosted over, or has glare on it;
- the service is always reachable. It needs an internet connection on the scanning device, and our hosting, database and other providers can have outages or maintenance;
- the service will run forever. We do not currently promise any specific plan, such as a redirect or a data export, for printed tags if BuildTags is ever closed or sold. A printed tag works only while the service it points to is operating.
4.Where to put it: your responsibility
You decide where the decal goes and you are responsible for putting it somewhere safe and lawful. Do not place a BuildTag where it could:
- block or reduce the driver's view of the road or mirrors;
- cover or alter a license plate, the VIN, or any label or marking the vehicle must show by law;
- cover lights, reflectors, cameras, radar or other driver-assistance or parking sensors, or safety equipment such as airbags or their markings;
- sit anywhere your local laws do not allow stickers or decals. Some places limit what may be attached to a windshield or windows, so check your local rules before you apply one.
Never scan, set up or handle a BuildTag while driving. See the installation guide for practical steps.
5.Surfaces and what can go wrong
We cannot promise that a BuildTag suits every surface. How it sticks, and how it comes off, depends on the surface and its condition. Take extra care with:
- freshly painted, repainted or aftermarket paint, and paint that is thin, damaged, faded or oxidized;
- vinyl wraps, paint protection film, ceramic or other coatings, and waxed or sealed surfaces;
- tinted or coated windows. Do not use a decal on the inside of tint film unless you know it is safe for that film;
- plastic trim, textured plastic, rubber, and soft or porous surfaces;
- glass (often a simpler choice than paint, but check the local rules above).
A decal can, depending on the surface, its age, the installation and the weather, leave residue, mark the finish or lift coating or paint when removed. We do not promise damage-free removal. If you are unsure, try an inconspicuous spot, or ask a professional installer first.
6.Removal
Removal precautions are in the installation guide. The longer a decal has been on, and the more sun, heat and weather it has seen, the harder it can be to remove cleanly. Wraps, coatings and film are best handled by a professional.
7.Your rights
This disclaimer works with our Terms of Service, Disclaimer and Refund & Replacement Policy. If a product is defective, damaged in shipping, or different from the proof you approved, that policy applies. To the extent permitted by law, we are not responsible for damage that follows from where, how or on what surface you applied the decal. Nothing here limits any right you have under law that cannot be waived, or liability that cannot legally be limited.
